(Pierre) – Brenda Watkins of Jefferson today claimed her $204,635 Dakota Cash jackpot from the August 11, 2012 drawing. The odds of winning the game’s jackpot are 1:324,632.
The lucky Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store on River Drive in North Sioux City; the business will receive a bonus of $5,000 for selling the winning ticket. While the location where she buys her lotto tickets varies (in addition to the convenience store in North Sioux City, she also regularly purchases tickets in Elk Point and Jefferson), the game she plays usually stays the same.
“I play Dakota Cash every week, and usually Hot Lotto. Sometimes I pick up a Powerball ticket or scratch tickets,” Watkins said. “But I always make sure to get a Dakota Cash ticket. I’ve just felt that my chances of winning would be greater playing Dakota Cash. And it looks like they were.”
Watkins, who is married and has two teenaged children, learned she had won the jackpot when her son woke her up to tell her. He had checked the winning numbers on-line and at first, his mother didn’t believe him.
“But then I could tell he was serious by how nervous and excited he was. So I went on-line and looked at the numbers myself. I checked that ticket 30, 40 times, to make sure. Most people I called to tell didn’t believe me, either. Why would I make that up?” said Watkins.
Although she’s only been a jackpot winner for a day or two, Watkins says the family already has some ideas on what to do with the winnings, including paying off their home and bills, and putting some in the bank. She also encourages others to keep trying their luck.
“It’s true that you can’t win if you don’t play,” she said.
Dakota Cash is played and won only in South Dakota. The jackpot currently sits at $20,000 for the next drawing on Wed., August 15, 2012.
