(Pierre) – Robert Koepke of Mitchell frequently meets his friends for coffee at County Fair Foods in Mitchell. During a recent visit, he not only got a hot cup of joe and some good conversation – he also picked up a jackpot-winning Dakota Cash ticket.
Koepke today claimed his $22,195 Dakota Cash jackpot from the October 17, 2012 drawing. The win came on a Quick Pick ticket he purchased at County Fair Foods; the store will receive a bonus of about $1,110 for the sale. Koepke says he regularly plays Hot Lotto, Wild Card 2 and Dakota Cash, and always leaves the number-picking up to chance.
“I always buy Quick Picks, I never choose my own numbers,” Koepke said. “And it looks like I did O.K. this time.”
It was Robert’s wife, Carol, who alerted her husband to the win. After hearing that he hadn’t checked his numbers yet, she checked them in their local newspaper (the Mitchell Daily Republic) and relayed the good news that he was the jackpot winner. The couple, who is retired and have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild, then shared the news with their three adult children, all of whom had different reactions.
“One asked about a loan, one wanted to know if we’d get the money today, and the other one said to enjoy our second honeymoon,” said Koepke. When asked if he and Carol were going to listen to the third child, he replied, “Yes, I think we might.”
While Koepke hasn’t decided yet how the winnings will be spent, he says he will continue to try his luck in the future.
“I enjoy playing the lottery. I’m pretty conservative about it, really, and if I don’t have a ticket or two, I feel like I might be missing out on something. Winning the jackpot was definitely a pleasant surprise,” he said.
Dakota Cash is played and won only in South Dakota. The jackpot currently sits at $20,000 for the next drawing on Wed., October 24, 2012.
