Their ticket matched five numbers but not the Powerball number. The couple purchased the Power Play option which doubled the $1 million prize to $2 million. The couple’s Powerball win is the seventh largest lotto prize awarded in South Dakota.
Barb Powers purchased the ticket at Big D Oil on Omaha St. in Rapid City the previous Saturday. “I was running behind schedule and was too late to buy tickets for that night’s drawing,” she said. “The clerk said she could sell me tickets for Wednesday’s drawing, so that’s what I did.”
“I checked my tickets on the internet, confirmed the numbers with my sons who were visiting, then called my husband,” Barb said. “He didn’t believe me at first.” The Powers said they are still in shock since learning about their good fortune. The couple plans to use their prize to pay bills.
The odds of winning Powerball’s five of five prize is 1:5,153,633. Big D Oil will receive a bonus of $20,000 for selling the winning ticket.
Powerball is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The jackpot currently sits at $70 million for tonight’s drawing.
